மாண்புமிகு தமிழக முதல்வர் கலைஞரின் தலைமையில், டாக்டர்.மு.ஆனந்த கிருஷ்ணனின் வழிகாட்டுதலின்படி கோவையில் செம்மொழி மாநாட்டோடு இணைந்து 9ஆம் தமிழ் இணைய மாநாடு மிகப்பெரிய அளவில் நடைபெற்றது.

Is Writing Online Without Pay Worth It? : NPR
Many online and social media companies — from Facebook to Twitter — that rely on writers to fuel their popularity have been valued at astronomical sums.
Last week, AOL agreed to buy The Huffington Post for $315 million. The sale will undoubtedly make some people rich.
But David Carr, the media columnist for The New York Times, posed this observation in his column on Monday: "The funny thing about all these frothy millions and billions piling up? Most of the value was created by people working free."

In Digital Age, 'Future Of Power' Must Be Smart : NPR
Joseph Nye coined the term "soft power," but he says that strategy alone is no longer enough. In The Future of Power, Nye explains that in the global information age, superpowers need a "smart power" strategy — the hard power of coercion and payment, plus the soft power of persuasion and attraction. Advances in technology have helped smaller actors compete on a global level, leading to a diffusion of power.
China, Nye tells NPR's Neal Conan, is an example of a country that recently turned to soft power to augment its position on the world stage. In 2007, says Nye, Chinese President Hu Jintao advocated for an investment in soft power, which "they did very well, with the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the Shanghai Exposition this year," says Nye.
Nonstate actors figure prominently in the equation. Though we typically think of them as malicious — terrorist groups like al-Qaida — there are benign forces as well. Organizations such as Oxfam and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation work outside the government to fight hunger and cure diseases.The Future Of Power

They look at the amount of fissile stockpiles that they believe each country has. They look at public statements, weapons tests, and basically come up with numbers.
In Pakistan's case, they've seen a very sharp increase in Pakistan's production of plutonium. They had one reactor producing weapons plutonium in about 2000. They now are about to bring their third one online.

Ending some payments for re-admissions is expected to save $8 million in the next fiscal year — a drop in the pool of Medicaid dollars.

It was Jencks' study — published earlier this year in The New England Journal of Medicine — that came up with some stunning numbers: 1 out of 5 Medicare patients go back into the hospital in a month — at a cost of about $17 billion a year. Jencks says the readmission rate easily could be cut by 15 percent, and with harder work, maybe even in half.

Vipassana meditation at an US prison and Christian opposition to the Buddhist practice
Deep in the Bible Belt, an ancient Eastern practice is taking root in the unlikeliest of places: Alabama's highest security prison.
For the past 10 days, the gym has been transformed into a peaceful Vipassana meditation hall.
"Vipassana means seeing things as they are," says inmate Johnny Mack Young, as he kneels on a blue mat, resting back on a small wooden stool. This is the position he keeps for up to 10 hours a day during the intense silent-meditation course.
"For the first three days, the only thing we do is sit and focus on our breath," Young says. "This is to still the mind and get the mind sharp."
Isolated in the gym, the inmates wake up at 4 a.m. and meditate on and off until 9 p.m. They eat a strict vegetarian diet. They can't smoke or drink coffee. And there is absolutely no conversation, only an internal examination of how the body is reacting.
"You'll start feeling little stuff moving all around on your body," Young says. "Some guys can't handle this; some guys scream."
It's a rude awakening for some prisoners, Vipassana teacher Carl Franz says.
"Everyone's mind is kind of Pandora's box and when you have 33 rather serious convicts facing their past, and their own minds, their memories, their regrets, rough childhood, whatever, their crimes, lots of stuff comes up," Franz says.
For Young, a convicted murderer, that stuff includes his childhood role in the accidental death of his baby sister, the fact he never mourned his mother's death and his crime -– a drug-related murder.
"That's one of the things that tortures me," Young says. "We learn this stuff. We learn it too late in life."
Now, aged 61 and likely in the last home he'll know, Young says he just tries to have the highest quality life he can. He says that prior to taking the meditation course, he was in trouble a lot, fighting and trying to escape.
"It changed my life," he says.
Dr. Ron Cavanaugh, treatment director for the Alabama Department of Corrections, says many inmates put their defenses up, denying responsibility for their crimes and blaming others. But the meditation practice, he says, chips away at those defense mechanisms.
"They have nobody to talk to," Cavanaugh says. "So there's nobody that they can deny stuff with or project everything with."
Cavanaugh says inmates who go through the course have a 20 percent reduction in disciplinary action. But it hasn't been an easy sell in Alabama, a state known for harsh punishment policies like chain gangs and hitching posts.

For the past 10 days, the gym has been transformed into a peaceful Vipassana meditation hall.
"Vipassana means seeing things as they are," says inmate Johnny Mack Young, as he kneels on a blue mat, resting back on a small wooden stool. This is the position he keeps for up to 10 hours a day during the intense silent-meditation course.
"For the first three days, the only thing we do is sit and focus on our breath," Young says. "This is to still the mind and get the mind sharp."
Isolated in the gym, the inmates wake up at 4 a.m. and meditate on and off until 9 p.m. They eat a strict vegetarian diet. They can't smoke or drink coffee. And there is absolutely no conversation, only an internal examination of how the body is reacting.
"You'll start feeling little stuff moving all around on your body," Young says. "Some guys can't handle this; some guys scream."
It's a rude awakening for some prisoners, Vipassana teacher Carl Franz says.
"Everyone's mind is kind of Pandora's box and when you have 33 rather serious convicts facing their past, and their own minds, their memories, their regrets, rough childhood, whatever, their crimes, lots of stuff comes up," Franz says.
For Young, a convicted murderer, that stuff includes his childhood role in the accidental death of his baby sister, the fact he never mourned his mother's death and his crime -– a drug-related murder.
"That's one of the things that tortures me," Young says. "We learn this stuff. We learn it too late in life."
Now, aged 61 and likely in the last home he'll know, Young says he just tries to have the highest quality life he can. He says that prior to taking the meditation course, he was in trouble a lot, fighting and trying to escape.
"It changed my life," he says.
Dr. Ron Cavanaugh, treatment director for the Alabama Department of Corrections, says many inmates put their defenses up, denying responsibility for their crimes and blaming others. But the meditation practice, he says, chips away at those defense mechanisms.
"They have nobody to talk to," Cavanaugh says. "So there's nobody that they can deny stuff with or project everything with."
Cavanaugh says inmates who go through the course have a 20 percent reduction in disciplinary action. But it hasn't been an easy sell in Alabama, a state known for harsh punishment policies like chain gangs and hitching posts.

The brain damage involved in pseudobulbar affect appears to disrupt the communication between the frontal lobes, where the emotion of crying may be controlled, and the “crying center” in these deep brain structures. The result is a loss of control, as if a driver could no longer work the brakes. (In some cases, the result is uncontrollable laughter, an equally disturbing anomaly.) It should be pointed out that pseudobulbar affect is amenable to treatment, and some patients have been treated successfully with the recently FDA approved drug Nuedexta.

Tamil writer R. Mahadevan (1913-1957), also known as Devan. Devan was the executive editor of Ananda Vikatan, a Tamil journal that is more than 75 years old.
Devan succeeded a well-known and colourful personality, Kalki (R. Krishnamurthy) in 1941 when the latter left Ananda Vikatan to found his own journal Kalki.
S.S. Vasan, the boss of Ananda Vikatan, didn't depend just on fiction. He published interviews with celebrities, their response to the issue or event of the week, an open letter to a leading personality, news of the world and the World War II, short stories, one or two serial stories, a woman's page, editorials mostly on politics, political cartoons, a contemporary commentary on a Tamil classic, and jokes and humorous snippets. There was also an occasional intellectual debate. He presented a variety of reading material of such consistent quality that the legendary Tamil scholar U.Ve. Swaminatha Aiyar agreed to have his autobiography serialised in the magazine.Stalwarts like Savi, Nadodi, Kadir, and a few others did leave the organisation only to return embarrassedly a little later.
Reading Kalki's fiction, many writers assumed pseudonyms such as Sivakami, Vikraman, Nandini, Naganandi — all Kalki's characters from his serials. But none seemed to have come forward to assume names such as Sambu, Chandru, Jagannathan or Sudarsanan, all popular characters from Devan's works. That way Devan resembled Charles Dickens.
Though Sir Walter Scott was the role model for many Indian writers of that time, Kalki followed Alexander Dumas.
Both Kalki and Devan were also popular as humorists. Kalki was satirical but Devan depended on irony. There is no doubt both (as well as a number of their contemporaries) liberally took inspiration from popular Western journals such as Strand, Argosy, New Yorker and The Saturday Evening Post.
O' Henry came in handy.
Dozens of variations of `The Gift of the Magi' appeared in a number of Indian languages. Maupassant was another useful source.
His first serial novel in Ananda Vikatan ("Kalvanin Kathali") was designed to be a screen story.
The respected pioneer of Tamil movies, K. Subramanyam, made a film based on Kalki's novel, Thyaga Bhoomi.
Kalki's stories "Poyman Karadu", "Kalvanin Kathali" and "Parthiban Kanavu" were made into films after his death. All proved that his popular stories weren't ideal material for movies.
On the other hand, only one novel of Devan was made into a film: "Gomathiyin Kathalan". Another very popular creation of Devan was made into a television serial.
Devan has not been that fortunate. One novel, Justice Jagannathan, recently appeared in a competent English translation.
