Q. Help. My friend’s house in Quincy was inundated by fruit flies in 2010. They died in winter, but they are back, most of them outdoors but some of them inside. She has a Dumpster outside a kitchen window, but has no fruit in the house. She has tried all kinds of remedies, including vinegar, without success. Is there a surefire prevention or traps?

A. One good trap is a bowl of vinegar to which a few drops of vegetable oil is added. The vinegar attracts them, and they die when they get stuck in the oil. Be sure the vinegar is grape or apple; the flies will ignore grain vinegar. You can also buy a fruit fly trap from the Gardens Alive! catalog (513-354-1484). They may not be fruit flies but rather fungus gnats, often called fruit flies. You can buy a trap for fungus gnats from Gardens Alive!
