They passed hurtful rumors, launched personal attacks and generally drove discussions into the gutter — all while hiding behind the veil of anonymity. The comments had become a drain on our resources.

Another reason: Anonymous commenting was inconsistent with our print policy. We would never allow these attacks and crude language in the newspaper; why is it OK online?

Finally, anonymous comments were not good for our company and our reputation. Many readers were turned off by them (believe me, I got calls). And what advertiser wants to be connected with this ugliness?

But commenting has returned – just not anonymously. As of July 7, we began requiring users to give us a credit card number before they can comment. We are not doing this to make money (we’re charging 99 cents, one time). Instead, we want the name and community of residence of the user. That name and community will then be attached to any comment the user makes, ending anonymity."

The ACLU argues in its complaint that "due to the very nature of the Internet, virtually every communication on the Internet may potentially be received by a minor and therefore may potentially be the basis for prosecution." With no easy way to verify anyone's age, everyone on the Internet must be treated as though they are minors. But what does that mean for material that adults can legally access?
