Daya Master & George Master call on Prabhakaran to surrender

களத்துமேடு: தயா மாஸ்டர், ஜோர்ச் மாஸ்டர் இருவரும் ஊடகங்களுக்கு வழங்கிய செவ்வி :: Taped statements a propaganda coup for Sri Lanka

A senior member of the Tamil Tigers who surrendered to Sri Lankan troops last week is urging the cornered rebels to lay down their arms.

Velayutham "Daya Master" Dayanithi said the Tamil rebels were using civilians as human shields and had fired at those who attempted to flee the war zone.

The "LTTE was keeping the Tamil people as hostages," he said, using the acronym for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels. "Nearly 200 civilians died due to LTTE fire. LTTE propaganda was that these people died because of military shelling."

The Tamil Tigers' former media coordinator, Mr. Dayanithi, who goes by his nom de guerre Daya Master, gave himself up on April 20 after crossing the frontline from the rebel-held area to the government side. He is now detained in Colombo.

The National Post viewed a video recording of the interview. It was conducted Saturday under military supervision but he appeared relaxed as he told his story and answered questions on camera.

Also interviewed on the hour-long video was George Master, who served as a translator for the Tamil Tigers at peace negotiations between 1995 and 2006.

An elderly man with a full white beard, he said he opposed violence and had quit the Tigers after the latest round of talks failed. He said he had wanted to join his daughter in Australia but the rebels would not let him leave.

Aided by children, he escaped on foot last week and is now detained in Colombo. He said the remaining Tamil Tigers should "renounce violence, throw away their arms, leave the leader and come to the military-controlled areas."

Daya Master said the guerrilla leader Velupillai Prabhakaran seems to believe that if he holds on long enough a foreign country will come to his rescue.

"Even after his area of control has been reduced to such a small strip of land, he continues to drag on with the war," he said. "I think it is better Prabhakaran stops this war, lay down arms and bring everything to an end."

The comments of the two captives are a propaganda coup for the Sri Lankan military, which is trying to finish off rebels who have waged a battle for Tamil independence that has spanned three decades.

The Tamil Tigers are now surrounded in a 10-square-kilometre strip of jungle and sand. With perhaps only days left before the war is finished, the military is facing allegations it has failed to adequately protect civilians and may be guilty of war crimes.

The United Nations has reported that as many as 20,000 may have been killed and injured since January, and Tamil protesters in Toronto, Ottawa and other cities have accused the government of genocide.

But Daya Master said the demonstrators have it wrong. "I think the Tamil diaspora, particularly the third generation who had never seen their birth places, are engulfed in demonstrations without knowing the ground reality. I think they are being kept in the dark as to the reality prevailing here," he said.

He also said that humanitarian aid money sent to Sri Lanka by Tamils living abroad had been misappropriated by the rebels. "These funds have been utilized for military purposes instead of the welfare of the Tamil people," he said.

In the past week, 110,000 have escaped the conflict area. They came in a sudden wave after the military blasted a rebel defensive berm. The displaced civilians are being held at camps around the city of Vavunya. The UN believes that up to 50,000 remain in the war zone but the government puts the figure at 15,000-20,000.

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and the French Minister Bernard Kouchner were to arrive in Colombo on Wednesday. They want Sri Lanka to allow humanitarian workers access to the region.

Canada has joined other nations in calling for a ceasefire to safeguard the civilians. The Sri Lankan government announced Monday it would no longer use heavy weapons such as artillery or air strikes but that it would continue military operations. The Tigers have accused the military of already breaking its pledge to use only light weapons.

Intense fighting continued Tuesday. The military said it had captured two more rebel positions following predawn raids.

The rebels had tried to ram troops with an explosive-laden truck in the morning. Troops opened fire at the approaching vehicle, causing it to explode before reaching its target, the military said.

Was It A Train Hijack?

Was It A Train Hijack?: "It was a bizarre railway accident. He ran the electric train for about 7 kilometers unnoticed before ramming it into a goods train, leaving four persons dead and 11 injured near the busy Vyasarpadi jeeva station in Chennai’s north-western suburb. As the Electric Multiple Unit ( EMU) was parked, the unauthorized man walked into the engine half an hour before its scheduled departure. Some passengers too boarded the train believing to be a regular service.

The train however was moving on a wrong line. It collided with the goods train and the accident followed and nobody knows how all this happened. On seeing the fast approaching EMU towards them two drivers of the goods train jumped out. The EMU was travelling at a speed of over 90 Kms per hour.

The train had passed through two railway stations including the important Basin Bridge Junction.

Who was at the wheels of the train? How did the railway authorities let him gain access to the engine. Was it a train hijack? Or was it just a prank by an insane man. These are a few questions the Southern Railyways will have to answer sooner or later."

The introduction to Butcher and Bolt asks the essential questions:

- how could the socially unpopular Taliban re-emerge from their shattering defeat in 2001;

- is there something in the country and the very nature of its people that make it so difficult to conquer;

- why is holding it so much more difficult than taking it;

- what really goes on under the surface of one of the world's most complex societies;

- why has reform never taken hold;

- why did invaders never seem to learn from their predecessors' mistakes (the present Russian Ambassador thinks the Coalition is repeating the Soviet errors) or consider anything but their own narrow interests?

The economics of turning people into things

The economics of turning people into things | open Democracy News Analysis: "Economics does violence when it forgets that social science must also be moral science

The G-8 has gone double-digit in recent times. After decades of high powered global conclaves where the few took decisions on policies that would affect the many, leaders of the most industrialised countries have reckoned that their utterances will carry more weight if they had a bigger chorus. The new members such as China, India, and Brazil are welcomed into the fold at a critical time. Their co-operation is needed on issues of climate change, resource exploitation, and currency stability. "

But the official unemployment rate currently stands at 8.1 percent"

How to Raise Our IQ

Op-Ed Columnist - How to Raise Our I.Q. - NYTimes.com: "If intelligence were deeply encoded in our genes, that would lead to the depressing conclusion that neither schooling nor antipoverty programs can accomplish much. Yet while this view of I.Q. as overwhelmingly inherited has been widely held, the evidence is growing that it is, at a practical level, profoundly wrong. Richard Nisbett, a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, has just demolished this view in a superb new book, “Intelligence and How to Get It,” which also offers terrific advice for addressing poverty and inequality in America."

Is Mayawati bringing the change India’s Dalits need ? « An academic view of India: "There are two reasons for me writing the post. First, the importance of the question in its own right. I have frequently alluded to and reviewed papers about a Dalit Revolution in North India. The paper I will talk about contests this notion, and does it quite convincingly. The other reason is to contrast the legitimate criticism that the paper makes by unearthing ground realities, with the half-baked and prejudiced criticism of Mayawati one finds in India’s ‘mainstream media’."

The saying went something like this: After we sort out Kosovo's independence, the rest of the Balkans' transition and accession to the European Union will be routine procedure. But now there is a new hurdle in the road, and it's a high one: Bosnia.

Subramania Sami: Sonia Gandhi & Foreign Conspiracy Theory

Indian Election: Hindus can Change the Landscape: The Congress Party Ms.Sonia Gandhi seeing the imminent collapse of the UPA has set up a seven member 'crisis management'team of foreigners based in a five star hotel in Delhi.This is a serious threat to India's national security.

While the names of all seven members are available with me, I am gathering the details antecedents of these dirty seven. The first member identified for me is an obscure UK-based journalist called Mr.David Green who has written for London tabloids on "snack foods".He was easy to identify because he is often seen by SPG at the residence of Ms.Sonia Gandhi reading secret files being made available to her by some Ministers and bureaucrats.Indian intelligence is being blocked by the Home Minister P.Chidambaram from investigating whether Mr.Green is an operative for British Intelligence,the MI-6.

One of the tasks assigned to this nefarious team is how to doctor the electronic voting machines in about 50 constituencies by using dual passwords technique and by hacking via cyber techniques.

Otherwis e, I shall move the Courts for action.

The revelation confirms the disclosure I made after a visit to the Department of Development Studies, University of Cambridge in 2005. Sonia Gandhi: Rae Bareli nomination papers should be rejected

SUBRAMANIAN SWAMY « Janamejayan’s Weblog: "The nomination of Ms.Sonia Gandhi as a candidate for Lok Sabha from Rae Bareli is liable to be rejected because her name does not appear in the Home Ministry records of all registered citizens of India. There is a name of one Ms.Antonia Maino, born in Luciana, Italy, who has been granted citizenship of India in 1983. But Ms.Sonia Gandhi claims, according to Lok Sabha records, as having being born in Orbassano, Italy. Moreover there is no G.O or official notification which is required, that Sonia Gandhi is the changed name of Ms.Antonia Maino.

Moreover, Ms.Sonia Gandhi, even if she is Ms.Antonia Maino, has not submitted an official certificate from Italy Internal Affairs Department that she has formally renounced her Italian citizenship. This is a mandatory requirement for grant of Indian citizenship. Hence on these two counts Ms.Sonia Gandhi must produce proof of Indian citizenship at the time of scrutiny of her nomination forms. Otherwise her nomination papers must be rejected."
