New trend on Live Preview? « Shubha Mudgal: "Ask a Hindustani classical musician what he or she will perform at a concert and most likely, you’ll get a lot of humming and hawing or a non-commital dekhenge, kyaa mood bantaa hai…. or something equally ambivalent. Which is what leads me to wonder how and what is leading classical musicians featured in the Live Preview section of Time Out Mumbai to disclose"

Self-immolation in India: Suicide, sathi, Hinduism
Chicago Reader Blogs: Post No Bills: "On November 3, 2006, Chicago activist, music enthusiast, and sound engineer Malachi Ritscher, immolated himself alongside Chicago's Kennedy Expressway, seemingly motivated by discontent with the United States' occupation of Iraq. He published a 'personal statement' and self-written obituary on his website, SavageSound.com. Next to his body was found a videotape and a small sign, on which the phrase, 'Thou Shalt Not Kill' was printed."
In the past two decades, in some countries such as Australia, there has been a remarkable increase in hanging as a means of suicide, especially among younger people, accompanied by a corresponding decrease in the use of firearms.
In general, elderly people tend to adopt methods involving less physical strength, such as drowning or jumping from heights; this has been recorded particularly in HongKong, China and Singapore.
Nearly everywhere, women tend to adopt ‘‘softer’’ methods – for example, overdosing with medicines – both in fatal and in non-fatal suicide attempts.
A notable exception to this is the practice of self-immolation in India.
The ethnic Indians had the highest rate of suicide on the island. Singapore’s ethnic Indians are generally followers of Hinduism, a faith that believes in reincarnation and does not strictly forbid suicide.
Ref Singh SP, Santosh PJ, Avasthi A & Kulhara P (1998) A psychosocial study of self-immolation in India. Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, vol 97, p71-75
Wiley InterScience :: JOURNALS :: Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica: "The group as a whole had a high score on Pierce's Suicide Intent Scale and displayed internal locus of control orientation. Most were ambitious, aggressive, hostile and felt alienated. The absence of manifest psychopathology sets this group apart from cases of deliberate self-harm arising in the context of psychiatric morbidity. Thwarted ambitions, a sense of alienation and intropunitive hostility can lead to protest which at times becomes altruistic and results in self-immolation."

How Would You Feel if Your Flickr Account Were Permanently Deleted? | Thomas Hawk Digital Connection: "capriciously and callously Flickr goes about deleting accounts with no warning. The latest example comes from Flickr user Shéhérazade. After paying for a Flickr Pro account and uploading photos to a stream on Flickr that had been visited over 150,000 times, Shéhérazade found that one day her account was in her words, “deleted without any reason or warning.” According to Shéhérazade, when she tried to contact Flickr about the problem, “Terrence” from the Flickr Censorship Bureau (FCB) told her that her account had been deleted because it included photos that had not been taken by her."
Is Poverty the Problem, Or Is Wealth?
Foreign Policy: The Poor Man’s Burden: "Eighty years ago, a depression changed the way we think about poverty. It took decades for the world to recover and to remember that if people are given freedom, they will prosper. Now, in the wake of another massive meltdown, the fear that shocked us into depending on government to fix poverty is spreading once again—and threatening to undo many of the gains we’ve made."
The End of Poverty, the new film: Even in the midst of the current economic crisis, few would contest the fact that humans live amidst an abundance of wealth and resources. Bolivians Appear To Back Charter - washingtonpost.com: BY: Joshua Partlow | The Washington Post
After a prolonged debate that has split the country, unofficial results indicate that Bolivians voted to approve a new constitution Sunday, an affirmation of the socialist project begun three years ago by Evo Morales, the nation's first indigenous president.
"The new constitution expands the state's control over the economy, something that Morales has already pursued aggressively in a series of contract renegotiations to extract more government revenue from the foreign companies in the petroleum sector. The nationalizations led to a $1.3 billion increase, representing 10 percent of the country's gross domestic product, in hydrocarbon revenue from 2004 to 2007, according to the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington.
The constitution also outlines rights for Bolivia's 36 Indian nations, as they are known, such as allocating seats in the National Congress for minority indigenous groups, and requiring consultation with local residents before taking natural resources from indigenous territories. It also sanctions the system known as communal justice, in which tribal leaders bypass the country's courts to mete out punishments, including beatings and hangings."

Our forgotten crisis
Our forgotten crisis - International Herald Tribune: BY: U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and Spanish Prime Minister Rodriguez Zapatero
We do not see many references to the food crisis in the news these days. Headlines are dominated by the economic slowdown. Forgotten though it may be, however, the food crisis has not gone away. Millions of people still experience it every day.

Bhutan's Radicalized Refugees: Part III
World Politics Review | Bhutan's Radicalized Refugees: Part III: BY: Don Duncan
Estimates put the number of ethnic Nepalese still living in Bhutan at around 100,000 -- nearly one-sixth of the population. Many, like Indra, had their family vanish in 1991 and have lived in a mixture of fear and paranoia since then. Today, two decades later, the arrival of democracy promises to eliminate what remains of ethnic inequality in Bhutan. But many ethnic Nepalese here still feel vulnerable, and human rights groups say they still face considerable discrimination.

Oregon Council for the Humanities: "Why polite conversation is destroying democracy By Amanda Waldroupe"
The Fall-Winter 2008 issue of Oregon Humanities is all about civility—that virtue too often confused with its less polished cousin, politeness. That’s a shame, Amanda Waldroupe argues in the cover story, since politeness is the Great Destroyer of democracy, whereas civility engenders fruitful politics.
Oregon Council for the Humanities: Don’t question people’s motives. Question their judgment.

No Snickering - That Road Sign Means Something Else - NYTimes.com: "In the scale of embarrassing place names, Crapstone ranks pretty high. But Britain is full of them. Some are mostly amusing, like Ugley, Essex; East Breast, in western Scotland; North Piddle, in Worcestershire; and Spanker Lane, in Derbyshire.
Others evoke images that may conflict with residents’ efforts to appear dignified when, for example, applying for jobs.
These include Crotch Crescent, Oxford; Titty Ho, Northamptonshire; Wetwang, East Yorkshire; Slutshole Lane, Norfolk; and Thong, Kent. And, in a country that delights in lavatory humor, particularly if the word “bottom” is involved, there is Pratts Bottom, in Kent, doubly cursed because “prat” is slang for buffoon."

Norms, Minorities, and Collective Choice Online
Norms, Minorities, and Collective Choice Online [Full Text]: "we should try to capture variation by paying more attention to the decision rules governing choice within collectivities on the Internet. As best we know, all of the sociologically "interesting" collective endeavors on the Internet are characterized by rules or norms; that is, blogs, online discussion groups, and other such forums of communication may appear chaotic and anarchic, but are characterized by informal rules that shape conversation. More generally, rules structure the choices made by participants in a wide variety of endeavors, and hence influence the outcomes of these choices.
bias toward openness is part of what gives the Internet its "generative" character.22 However, it also means that collective online projects are vulnerable to disruption by outsiders who do not share the goals of the project, because they do not agree with them, because they enjoy being "trolls," or because they have harmful economic incentives
heuristic diversity (differences, roughly, in points of view) is very valuable to knowledge generation. However, he also notes that diversity of final goals may make group coordination more difficult, and that heuristic diversity often tends to be correlated with diversity of goals.
assessment suggests that some of the differences in how the rules of Wikipedia and the Daily Kos handle majority-minority relations are normatively justified."

Government forces in Sri Lanka say they are closing in on the last redoubt of the Tamil Tigers, which appear on the verge of defeat after 26 years of war. In recent weeks, troops have captured towns and strategic roads in the disputed north and blockaded sea lanes, boxing the insurgents into a shrinking area.
Rights groups say the LTTE and government troops are to blame for the escalating humanitarian crisis. By preventing civilians from fleeing, the rebels are using them as human shields.
The LTTE is accused of recruiting child soldiers and crushing dissent in its territory. It seeks a separate state for minority Tamils in the north and east of the country. It alleges mistreatment at the hands of ethnic Sinhalese, who make up 75 percent of a population of 20 million.

India Addresses Sexual Inequality
Asia Sentinel - India Addresses Sexual Inequality: BY: Priyanka Bhardwaj
As India moves slowly towards liberalizing sexual relations, debate is now raging over recent recommendations by a government commission that seeks to equalize penalties for men and women in cases of adultery – something women’s rights groups regard with dread. While currently women can’t be charged with adultery, it is hardly a privilege.

Mr. Obama seems aware that, at the end of the day, he will not be judged by his predecessor's approval ratings. Instead, he will soon find himself under pressure to measure up to two Bush achievements: a strategic victory in Iraq, and the prevention of another attack on America's home soil.
History Will Remember Bush Well

Today, President George W. Bush leaves office with approval ratings only slightly higher than Truman's. And I will make this prediction: The verdict of history on the Bush presidency will not be the same as the verdict of contemporary critics.

The New Science of Sustainable Dynamics
healing response to humanity's excesses :: build an ecological civilization: "Norbert Wiener pondered a new science in his classic book Cybernetics, one that flirted with the 'boundary regions of science.' Sustainability today occupies a similar state, but the concept is used more as a policy guide and buzzword than as a true science.
As policy, the Bruntland Report in 1987 defined sustainability as 'development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.' Beyond this important sense of applied ethics, sustainability must also be approached as a discipline governed by the scientific method.

The Positive Deviance Initiative Story
The Positive Deviance Initiative Story: "Positive deviance says people are more likely to act their way into a new way of thinking than to think their way into a new way of acting."
the development paradigm is called KAP (knowledge, attitude, practice). It's based on the premise that if you change people's knowledge that changes their attitude and that changes their practice, but again that does not really work for behavior change. We know to exercise, not to smoke, etcetera, but it rarely results in behavior change. Positive Deviance reverses that paradigm to PAK. You start by enabling people to change their practice, which then changes their attitude, and ultimately they internalize new knowledge.
